Membership Policies

The Keeling Society is a private organization that is committed to its values of neutrality, creativity, and excellence. Members are selected on an ad-hoc basis throughout the year, depending on availability of seats and other factors.

We are dedicated to maintaining gender and regional balance, however, this is not a strict mandate. If you have any questions about this, or any of our membership policies, do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Policies

1.

Tolerance and Respect

  • Please respect other member’s views and refrain from using abusive, angry, or intolerant language. Disagreements should be handled in a courteous manner, and personal issues should be handled in private. For academic disagreements, refer to section 3.

  • Members caught discriminating on the basis of sex, religion, nationality, ethnicity, or political beliefs will be removed immediately from the group and banned for life. The Keeling Society has a zero-harassment policy in place, and is committed to maintaining political neutrality and scientific rigor.

2.

Participation

  • Members are required to attend a minimum of two events every calendar year to renew their membership for the next year.

    •      If a member does not oblige, they will not be admitted back into the society unless they re-apply and are selected again.

3.

Epistemic Responsibility & Integrity

  • When engaging in research writing, calls for papers, or any event of the society, no plagiarized work is permitted.

    • The permissions of AI usage is controlled. We support the fostering of AI literacy and see it as a crucial skill for the 21st century. However, it is not a short-cut or replacement of the individual effort needed to acquire the intellectual skills for future leaders.

  • In this vein, AI may only be used to summarize long texts, data analysis and visualization, or to find sources of research. In this event, proper attribution is required in APA format.

    • If a member is caught using AI, plagiarism, or self-plagiarism in the calls for paper or research paper writing, they will be removed and banned for life. No exceptions.

  • If you have a disagreement on an academic matter, please engage in fruitful and calm discussion, present primary sources to explain your views, and keep an open mind.

4.

Membership

  • The Keeling Society welcomes applications from individuals with a strong passion for climate science. However, due to the advanced nature of our discussions and activities, membership is primarily based on demonstrated academic qualifications and expertise in relevant fields.

    • Applicants are expected to have a strong understanding of the IPCC’s work and be able to engage in critical analysis of scientific research. Prior experience in research or related fields is highly valued.

    • TKS is primarily a youth organization. Therefore, we prefer applicants from the ages of 18-35.

      • We accept, however, that there may be exceptional young individuals below this threshold who qualify for our society, and we endeavour to do our best to accommodate them.

  •  As a member of TKS, you enjoy special events, debates, and opportunities to publish. In addition, you are welcome to:

    • Be a host of Climate Café, upon written request to the CPs and a call to prove your public speaking skills.

    • Host an event for other TKS members; whether it’s formal or informal.

    • Present your ideas at a TKS dinner.

    • Request for any event, push proposals forward, suggest any event. If it is relevant to TKS’s work and the majority of members agree, it can go through.

  • Membership is granted upon application and review of the following factors:

    • Educational background and relevance to TKS, ranked in the order presented:

      • Natural sciences, interdisciplinary sciences, social sciences and select humanities fields if the applicant can demonstrate a strong understanding of TKS’s work.

    • Knowledge of IPCC methodology and or capacity to learn, indicated by their self-assessment and evidenced by their writing prompts. An ability to engage in technical and high-level academic work, in formal English. (C1-C2)

    • Creativity and nuanced thinking present in the writing prompts during the application.

    • If a membership application has been declined, you may appeal the decision by writing to tanvi@thekeelingsociety.com or hueyyew@thekeelingsociety.com, outlining your qualifications as per the membership criteria and experience relevant to TKS’s field.

      • The application will be reviewed once more, and if necessary, a video interview will take place, following which a final decision will be made, after which there may be no more appeals.
