IPCC for You(th)
This is where you'll find all relevant information for the IPCC for You(th) AR6 SPM 2024 project.
Project Background
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) Summary for Policymakers (SPM) is a critical document outlining the latest scientific consensus on climate change. However, the extensive scientific language and technical details can make it challenging for young people to access and understand this crucial information.
This knowledge gap hinders youth engagement in climate action. Young people are a powerful force for change, but they need clear and concise information to effectively participate in climate solutions. This project aims to bridge this gap by simplifying the IPCC AR6 SPM for a youth audience.
Challenges Addressed:
-
Complexity of the Original Text: The IPCC AR6 SPM, while comprehensive, uses scientific jargon and technical details that can be inaccessible to non-experts, particularly young people.
-
Limited Accessibility for Youth: The length and complexity of the document can be discouraging for young people seeking to understand the urgency and science behind climate change.
-
Engagement Barrier for Action: Without a clear understanding of the science, young people may struggle to identify their role in climate action and feel empowered to take steps towards solutions.
Project Goals:
-
Create a Youth-Friendly Version: This project aims to develop a simplified and engaging version of the IPCC AR6 SPM that effectively communicates the key findings to a youth audience.
-
Increase Youth Understanding: By making the science more accessible, we aim to empower young people with a clear understanding of the climate crisis and its implications.

Project Overview
This project is being done in three phases.
-
Phase 1: Sections A.1 to A.3.5 (May to July)
-
Phase 2: Sections A.3.6 to B.4.3 (July to August)
-
Phase 3: Sections B.5 to D.2.4 (September to October)
We are currently wrapping up phase 1 and about to move into section 2.
The reason for splitting up the phases is to comfortably allow our members enough time to work on a particular section that suits their interests. The phases roughly correspond with the IPCC's three working groups (physical science basis, adaptation impacts, and mitigation).
